GpsDrive is a car (bike, ship, plane) navigation system for the linux system. On this page you will find a Mac OS X compiled version which has an addon for Mac OS X. It uses the airport WLAN card for scanning wireless accesspoints and stores them into the MySQL database (like KISMET under linux). Combined with a GPS receiver the accespoints will be shown geo-referenced on the map in the GpsDrive application. For using that feature, you must have installed a MySQL database and your computer needs a Airport WLAN card. See the GpsDrive homepage for further information about GpsDrive.

It is very simple to install and use the Mac OS X version.

What you need for the Mac OS X GpsDrive version:

  • The X11 package from your Mac OS X CD
  • Download the GpsDrive Mac OS X port software

How to install the Mac OS X GpsDrive version:
  • Install the X11 package from your Mac OS X CD
  • Install the gpsdrive package from the downloaded "dmg" image. The gpsdrive package contains several libs which will be copied into the path "/sw".
Attention : If you have Fink installed and the directory "/sw/libs" already exists, the gpsdrive installer would overwrite the libs. In that case do not run the gpsdrive installer ! It could harm your (Fink) lib installation in "/sw/lib". Check that before installing the gpsdrive package ! Just try to run the gpsdrive application.
  • Copy the gpsdrive application into any folder of your system.

Start the gpsdrive application. It will start the X11 application and run gpsdrive. After you quit gpsdrive, you have to quit the X11 application manually.
After connecting a GPS device to the Mac computer, set in the settings dialog the connection to "serial connection" and enter the device name into the field. E.g. My GPS Bluetooth: "/dev/cu.HOLUXGR-230-SPPslave-1".
